Who is Alexis de Tocqueville?

In 1831, Alexis Charles-Henri de Tocqueville traveled throughout the United States. Tocqueville applauded the nation’s voluntary action on behalf of the common good. The observations made by de Tocqueville almost three centuries ago remain true today; Americans understand that advancing the common good means creating opportunities for a better life for all.
